Replacing your car’s air filter is a quick and easy task that can improve engine performance and fuel efficiency. It usually takes less than 10 minutes and requires no tools for most vehicles. Here’s how to do it yourself.
Locate the Air Filter Box
Open your car’s hood and look for a black plastic box near the engine with metal clips or screws—it’s usually square or rectangular and connected to a large air intake hose.
Open the Air Filter Box
Unclip or unscrew the lid of the air filter box. Carefully lift it to expose the air filter inside. You may need to move some hoses or covers out of the way, depending on your car model.
Remove the Old Air Filter
Take out the old air filter and note how it was positioned. Inspect it for excessive dirt or damage to confirm it needs replacing.
Insert the New Air Filter
Place the new air filter into the box in the same orientation as the old one. Make sure it fits snugly and seals all the edges to prevent unfiltered air from entering the engine.
Close the Air Filter Box
Secure the lid back in place using the clips or screws you removed. Double-check that it’s sealed properly and everything is reattached.
That’s it! A clean air filter helps your engine breathe better, which can improve performance and gas mileage. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but always check your owner’s manual for the right schedule for your car.
